Aiming for Optimal Performance and Maximum Savings on Ammunition
When it comes to buying ammo, there are about as many options as there are pellets in a shotgun shell. As with any commodity, quality and cost are the most important factors.
It’s time to take aim at the top contenders in the field.
The 9mm cartridgeis the single most popular handgun round in the world. It is used by federal, state and local law enforcement and competitive shooters. The average price for a round is 25 cents, which, unlike many things, has come down in price over the past several years. Rounds used for self-defense are more expensive than those employed for target practice. The 115 grain cartridge provides higher velocity and flatter trajectory and is ideal for target or range practice. The heavier 124 and 147 grain cartridges offer greater penetration and are thus better for self-defense.
Federal Premium Ammunition is rated best for reliability. Prices range from $23.99 for a box of 50 Champion Training cartridges to $37.99 for a box of 20 Personal Defense cartridges.
PMC is rated the best overall value, with a box of 1,000 115 grain cartridges selling for $249.99 and 124 grain fetching $264.99.
Magtech offers the cheapest brass-cased option. A box of 1,000 115 grain cartridges goes for $239.
Venom Ammunition is manufactured by a Turkish company relatively new to North America and offers an alternative to Remington, Winchester and CCI Blazer. It’s available in 9mm Luger. Boxes of 1,000 115 grain and 124 grain cartridges are selling for $259 on armoryfarm.com.
The most popular shotguns are 12 and 20 gauge. The 12 gauge is the best and most preferred for defense and is the top choice for police and military.
When it comes to 12 gauge shotgun ammo, experts list a number of excellent choices. These include 00 buckshot at 60 cents a round, No. 8 birdshot at 32 cents per round, and No. 4 buckshot at 40 cents a round.
Finally, there’s rifle ammunition.
The .22 LR ammo cartridge is the most common and frequently sells for less than 10 cents a round. If you want to really load up, 5,250 rounds of 36 grain ammo can be purchased for $333.99, while 2,000 rounds of 40 grain ammo is priced at $124.99.
With the AR-15 receiving so much publicity, the .223 Remington rifle is the most popular in the United States. Among the best ammo choices are 55 grain cartridges priced at 53 cents per round and 50 grain selling for $1 per round.
The .308 Winchester rifle, on the other hand, has become the top choice for hunters. They’ll shoot for savings with such deals as 500 rounds of 147 grain ammo going for $484.99 and 200 rounds priced at $218.99.
