Another summer has had its moment in the sun. It’s time to pack the really big beach bag with vacations, umbrellas, suntan lotion and Frisbees and replace it with a leaf bag replete with pumpkins, football games and Thanksgiving planning.
Another fall tradition is the start of hunting season for a number of game animals that include the star attraction at the Thanksgiving table; although the turkey also is hunted in spring, it’s especially popular in fall as people are licking their chops in anticipation of that savory meat gracing their holiday meals. Regardless of the type of game, being prepared is key to a successful fall hunt.
Let’s start with the essentials – a rifle and ammo. When it comes to the latter, 40 rounds is the recommended minimum. Make sure it’s quality ammunition purchased from trusted ammo manufacturers such as Armory Farm. Other essential ammo/rifle items are an ammo pouch/holder to prevent extra ammunition from rattling and a rifle sling and scope cover. To ensure you won’t run afoul of the law, make sure you have a hunting license/tag.
Since you’ll be outdoors, proper clothing is important and should account for varying conditions. Remember, a comfortable hunter is a successful hunter. The lineup includes an orange hat and vest, thermal underwear, socks, rain pants, waterproof boots, gloves, coats and sweaters.
This isn’t the hunting practiced by Daniel Boone and Davey Crockett. Electronics and optics have become standard equipment and include cellphone and charger, rangefinder, headlamp, camera and binoculars. There’s also food and drink (electrolytes are recommended), sunglasses, ear protection and toiletries. You want to be prepared for an emergency extended stay in the field without being loaded down like a pack mule.
For the hunting purists who want to make like Daniel and Davey, however, a rifle and ammo are all you really need to bring Tom and his brethren to the fall dinner table.
