Protecting Ammo from the Nefarious Forces of Nature
As summer turns to fall, nature and people implement various changes to coincide with the new season. Leaves turn from green to various shades of red, yellow, orange, and brown before floating to the ground. Home runs take a back seat to touchdowns.
Ammunition, on the other hand, is static and has to be protected from the elements so it can retain its firepower. Whether the weather is hot or cold, wet or dry, ammo demands a cool and dry climate.
Heat is generated from the explosion inside a cartridge during the firing process, but it’s the enemy of stored ammunition. Heat can damage the gunpowder and priming compounds inside the ammo. This can result in overpressure when firing or causing the gunpowder to be unreliable or inert. Similarly, storing ammo in an area that blows hot and cold can cause its deterioration.
Another foe of ammo is humidity, as dry powder and wet don’t mix. Ironically, quality ammunition can be immersed in water and, as long as it’s immediately dried and returned to a cool, dry place, retain its viability. Such is not the case when ammunition is improperly stored in a humid environment or is exposed to water over an extended period. Under these conditions, the ammo becomes worthless.
Along with ensuring ammo is stored in a cool and dry location, it’s equally important to keep it in a proper container. The cardboard and/or foam packaging that many types of ammo come in can absorb water from the air and allow corrosion. An air-tight and water-tight container is essential to prevent this from happening.
For ammunition to complete its mission, it must be protected from the villainous heat and humidity, remaining in a protective bubble of sorts until called to the firing line. With all these protective measures in place, not to be overlooked is the importance of purchasing quality ammunition from trusted ammo manufacturers as a further hedge in the war against the forces of nature.
Your reward will be a top performance throughout the seasons.
