When it comes to Superman, steel gets the nod over brass. After all, it’s the Man of Steel, not the Man of Brass.
When it comes to bullet casings, however, while both have their strengths, brass is the true super ammo.
Brass ammo is popular among shooters for a number of reasons, foremost being its ability to create a better chamber seal when a round is fired. This is due to brass being more malleable than steel and allowing for slight expansion and a perfect chamber fit. There’s also the reliability factor. Brass can be easily resized and reloaded a number of times, resulting in savings and load customization for specific tasks.
Brass’s kryptonite, if you will, is a higher price tag compared to steel. Generally, steel casings are considerably less than their brass counterparts. Also, while brass casings are more durable, they’re also heavier. This can be an issue if you’re toting large quantities of ammo.
Weight and cost aside, brass surpasses steel when it comes to overall shooting performance, starting with accuracy. Brass’s tighter chamber seal decreases the chance of gas leakage and fluctuating velocities. The result is more consistent shot placement.
Brass also gets the nod when it comes to reliability. As a result of its malleability, brass ammo is easier to extract after firing, making jams and misfiring less likely.
Finally, there’s the wear and tear factor. The rigidity of steel can cause increased wear on the firearm’s extractor and chamber. Since brass is softer, such wear is less likely to occur.
Brass is likewise the choice when weighing environmental and storage factors. Brass is more recyclable than steel. It’s also more resistant to corrosion and can be stored on a long term basis. Whether it’s brass or steel, insist on quality hunting and shooting ammo from trusted ammo manufacturers such as Armory Farm South Georgia.
So, the Man of Steel is made for the movies and allegedly faster than a speeding bullet. Just remember, however, to encase that bullet in a brass casing so it can live up to its billing and continue to perform at a super level.
